Spice Girls single “Wannabe” turns 18 today!!!


Exactly 18 years ago, the world was hit by one of the biggest pop songs in history, Wannabe was the first single released by a group of girls that would become pop legends, the Spice Girls phenomenon started with this iconic song and still to this day, Wannabe holds the top spot in any list about pop music.

“YO, I’LL TELL YA WHAT I WANT, I REALLY REALLY  WANT, TELL ME WHAT, SO TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT, WHAT YOU REALLY REALLY WANT”, those are the first famous words that every person who was a teenager in 1996 knows by heart!!!

The song was released in November 1996, with empowering lyrics “Wannabe” quickly became a massive hit and went to win Best British-Written Single at the 1997 Ivor Novello Awards and “Best Single at the 1997 Brit Awards.

Wannabe topped the UK Singles Chart for seven weeks, the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and by March 1997 the single was at the top of the charts in thirty-one countries.

The single sold over six million copies worldwide.


The iconic music video was filmed at the Midland Grand Hotel in St. Pancras, London on 19th of April 1996. Since then, the hotel became a huge visiting spot for fans of the group.
